Mums Who Leave Their Children

When Landmark Films approached OnlyDads to ask for our help and support in pulling their documentary together about mums who leave their children, we knew immediately that this would in every sense of the word be a landmark bit of television.

I know, from personal experience, that the default position of society is to vilify those mums who leave their children. There is (and I can state this with total confidence) a knee jerk, negative reaction from almost everyone who gets involved in discussions of mums who don’t raise their own children.

My eldest daughter has a phrase…I hope it gets used in this programme. She says “sometimes people get themselves into a muddle”. She is totally correct!

The programme hasn’t been made yet, but I fully expect it to be challenging…I said to Landmark that I would help them find potential case studies for this film and share with them the reaction to this programme idea. So, in their own words…

…Landmark Films has been asked to make a documentary for the BBC about women who have decided or somehow been forced, to leave their children.  Our intention – as with all Landmark documentaries – is to make a highly sensitive and serious programme about an often misunderstood subject.  We have done a fair bit of research already and there is no question that mothers who have left their children – for often very complicated and difficult reasons – are still vilified and stigmatised.  And equally the fathers that then end up raising the children, feel that they face prejudice about their abilities to parent.

The BBC and ourselves sincerely believe this is an important and valuable film to make.  And in order to do this in the most balanced way possible, we would eventually like to talk to both sides – the mother and father, so we can find out why the women left and how the men felt and coped with being left holding the children.  I will again reiterate the seriousness of our intent – we would of course hold all initial conversations in total confidence and the end documentary will hopefully be insightful and informative and crucially would help to question and break supposedly received wisdoms and stereotypes

Please feel free to look us up on www.landmarkfilms.com, where you will see that  we have made many films for the major broadcasters including BBC1, BBC2, BBC3 and Ch4. We are known for making intelligent, distinctive well-crafted documentaries and for maintaining excellent relationships with the people we film.

Please contact Andrea at Landmarkfilms on andrea@landmarkfilms.com or call 01865 297 220, we would very much like to talk to you, if you have had any experience of this situation.
