Online Dating: What Sort of People Do You Meet?!

In this post, Kairen (writer of the fabulous blog, Confesions of a Single Mum) tells us about the “types” you can meet when dating online. It’s a light-hearted post…

(I can say with confidence that I am none of these btw!!!)

I was brought up by parents who really came from the golden era. They met, they wrote carefully penned letters to each other and then they were married. It really was as short and sweet as that. When I first tried online dating I was petrified of telling them. Father did the stern look which was coupled with telling me only axe murderers use online dating, Mother on the other hand squealed with delight.  She, being the bit more savvy one, gushed with enthusiasm at the possibilities of meeting so many different people.

I can safely say I never found an axe murderer and my mother was right, but then we all know that our mothers are always right. I met them all…tall, short, boring, gorgeous, weird and anything else you can imagine. One thing did become very apparent that there are different types of online daters. Depending on what you’re looking for some types are good whereas other types need a wide berth. Now this is just a broad sweeping observation I made whilst meeting and chatting to lots of online daters.  I am sure all are lovely deep down so this small guide is just to help you adjust the rose-tinted specs and keep it real.

The Players – I’m mentioning them first as these are the ones I think most people assume are on Online Dating. The player normally comes in three flavours.

Married but don’t tell you. They are looking for a bit of fun on the side. Nothing more and nothing less. They won’t give phone numbers out and you will never go back to their place.

Partners don’t understand them. Same as the marrieds but to ease their conscience they tell you they are married. You might end up playing agony aunt to all their marital problems.

The Professional Dater. They have enough slick and smooth talk to melt your heart and then run. For them it’s the thrill of the chase, once they have caught your heart they are already looking for the next heart to chase.

The Desperates – they are looking for the wrong reasons. Maybe just been dumped and want a replacement fast. May be carrying way too much baggage that’s not been dealt with correctly and is just waiting to blow up probably in your face and it won’t be pretty. Proceed with caution.

The Weirdo’s – They don’t need that much explaining but they can be men pretending to be women, vice versa and lots of other weird things I don’t want to dwell on. Wide berth is recommended, it’s not your job to try to fix them.

The Honest Gem – Not really as rare as you think and they do exist. If you find one of these keep hold of them firmly with both hands.

So there you have it , did I miss a type out that you have come across? Let us know.

  1. have only come in contact with “the weirdo”. i have heard of the others, but am pretty sure the “honest gem” is just urban myth.

  2. no no no, the “honest gem” has been seen. A friend of mine found one and 9 years on they are still blissfully happy.

I think there is another category…

…what about the “explorer” (not like that!!!)

I mean those who go online dating not knowing what they want; those with few expectations – just hoping to find “something” but not really knowing what.

    Does that make sense?
